As a professional speaker and public figure, I often hear from people interested in my work or eager to share their own stories. Recently, a woman found me on Facebook and sent a message. Among other things, this newfound virtual friend said that she had decided to stop treating her lupus as an "unwanted houseguest" and learn to accept it; such an interesting way to think about her illness...an unwanted houseguest. Her comment lodged in my brain and I've thought about it over and over again. I knew exactly what she meant: Who wants lupus to take up residency in the spare bedroom?

Yet I wondered how helpful her perspective was when living with a chronic illness. A guest who would not pack her bags and leave after visiting all the tourist destinations and return to her home up north? No, chronic illnesses don't pack their bags and head off. Instead they linger, often requiring the constant attention of a two year old. And I completely understand how that constant attention can be draining, but I don't think wishing it away or pretending it isn't there serves us well either. No, the people I know who seem to do the best with chronic illness are the ones who accept that they have it, but do not allow it to take over their lives or rob them of their joy. An Oldie but Goodie...

My Grandfather's Blessings: Stories of Strength, Refuge, & Belonging
by Rachel Naomi Remen

My copy of this book has dog-eared pages, highlights and comments in the margins. It is one of my favorite books. The short vignettes always encourage me to look for and find the blessings in my life. I've had the great pleasure of both hearing Dr. Rachel Remen speak and attending Commonweal retreat with her. She is an amazing woman who has lived with Crohn's Disease for over 60 years. This book, along with her other book Kitchen Table Wisdom, are perfect for leaving on the nightstand and returning to over and over again.
Don't Miss This Wonderful Audio Book...
The Memory of Running
by Ron McLarty

While the print edition is readily available, by all means get the audio version of this book. The author is a professional narrator and the story absolutely comes to life through his delivery. Although the main character, Smithy Ide, begins as a self-proclaimed loser, he lands in my heart at the end of the book as a winner. I must warn you Smithy faces an abundance of challenges in this story, including many family challenges involving death, schizophrenia, gunshot wounds and more. But through it all, I looked forward to listening to this story every day as I rode a stationary bike. As Smithy road his bike cross country, I pedaled away at the gym and enjoyed his company. I looked forward to riding together every day and found him extremely charming and soulful in the end.
